Since we are hammering out a touchy subject right now with free agency, can we also please discuss the issue of having a player bench versus not having one?
It would be ideal to have this sorted out as well, prior to free agency beginning, since it has a big impact on free agency.
I will pose my opinion versus the other.
Currently, there are no player benches. This was done to prevent people from forgetting to set their lines each week and having a million line changes to track points on. I get this.
My opinion is that having a bench is important (2 or 3 spots like the NHL has). And people seem not to like having a goalie in one of these bench spots, which is fine by me either way on the goalie topic.
Argument for having a bench is as follows:
*. There is a rule saying that if you drop a player (say to make room for another during the year) you have to pay half the dropped players contract for the life of that contract and it will count against your cap. Having a bench will prevent you from needing to drop a player who is sent to the AHL for example or who is suspended for example, or who is a regular healthy scratch with his NHL club for example. If the rule for paying half a dropped player's salary is removed, then no bench makes a little more sense. But having no bench AND paying a players salary does not make sense.
*. No bench means less room to bring up prospects. Last year, Carl Hagelin for example, was a surprise. So was Krieder - though he came in during playoffs, it could just have easily happened during the year. Say you have a bottom feeder like Rod Pelley in your lineup for hits. But you also own Krieder and Hagelin (pretend this is last year). You can't bring up either of these stuf prospects without dropping somebody. With the bench you can just shift somebody onto your bench to call up the young gun.
I think I've summed it up. I may have forgotten certain points I'd meant to make. But if we can discuss it, and see where people stand. I really think it hurts to have no bench AND the penalty for dropping players. I would think it best to have a bench and the penalty or no bench and no penalty.
Does this make sense?
Bench and Penalty is good
No bench and no penalty is good too
